Recap of 2012 NAPABA Conference in Washington, D.C.

posted Nov 22, 2012, 5:57 AM by AABA Ohio   [ updated Nov 22, 2012, 5:57 AM ]

This year a number of AABA Ohio members attended the 2012 NAPABA Conference in Washington D.C.  - the most delegates we've sent in the past few years!  In addition to improving our visibility, AABA Ohio members benefited from an enormous variety of CLE's; networked with attorneys, judges, politicians, and in-house counsel from all over the country; listened to speeches and presentations by luminaries such as Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor, Second Circuit Court of Appeals Justice Denny Chin, Mazie Hinono (the first Asian-American woman elected to the Senate, the first U.S. Senator born in Japan, and the nation's first Buddhist Senator), and many others.  Next year's Convention will be held in Kansas City, and will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of NAPABA.

Mystified by the judge candidates on the Cuyahoga County ballot?

posted Sep 23, 2012, 11:13 AM by AABA Ohio   [ updated Sep 23, 2012, 11:13 AM ]

Independent non-partisan help is here. You can get information you need to vote for judges here, at Judge4Yourself.com. You don't have to wonder, "Who are these people?" We've provided ratings of every candidate, and their photos and short biographies.

Judge4Yourself.com’s ratings are made by four cooperating bar associations, with the help of dozens of experienced lawyers—many who work in the Cuyahoga County courts every day. Community representatives are also involved in our process. We interview the candidates, and review their answers to our questionnaire. We look at examples of the candidates’ writing, and get the input of lawyers who know their work.

Judge4Yourself.com’s ratings are non-partisan, and independent. We care only whether the candidates will be competent, fair and trustworthy judges. So we focus on each candidate’s integrity, knowledge, experience, diligence, and community understanding, and on every candidate’s ability to be impartial, even-tempered and respectful to the people who must come to court.

AABA Ohio Supports the Nomination of Asian Pacific American to be the next United States Solicitor General

posted Sep 17, 2010, 7:56 PM by AABA Ohio   [ updated Sep 9, 2012, 6:46 PM ]

The Asian Pacific American Bar of Ohio signed on to a joint letter to Robert Bauer, Esq., Counsel to the President, on behalf of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association and NAPABA Affiliates supporting the candidacies of two outstanding individuals for the position of United States Solicitor General: Preeta Bansal and Neal Katyal.

This is an opportune moment to make history with two outstanding candidates for the job. Both Ms. Bansal and Mr. Katyal are already prominent members of the Indian American community and either would be an exceptionally well-qualified diverse nominee.  The appointment of either Mr. Katyal or Ms. Bansal as Solicitor General would make him or her the only high-ranking Indian American in the Obama Administration outside of Dr. Rajiv Shah, Administrator of USAID.  Thus far, the highest ranked Asian Pacific American official at the DOJ has been Viet Dinh, who was appointed Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Policy by President George W. Bush in 2001.

In the history of the United States, there has never been an Asian Pacific American who has served in any of the top four positions at the Department of Justice.  President Obama can make history by nominating Preeta Bansal or Neal Katyal to serve as the next United States Solicitor General.
